Home fires are devastating, especially when a loved on gets caught in the flames. Fire marshals across Washington are trying to cut down on injuries and deaths during home fires, and are encouraging families to have a plan. The following steps are suggested to help keep your family safe in the event of a home fire. Stay safe out there!

• Sketch a floor plan that includes all doors, windows and other possible emergency exits from every room. People are encouraged to draw arrows to indicate primary exits and, with a different color, draw arrows to indicate secondary exits. People are also urged to choose a meeting place outside of the home and mark it on the escape plan.

• Write down the emergency telephone number for your local fire department and mark it on an escape plan.

• Practice escape plans twice a year with everyone who lives in your home.

• Keep an escape plan posted on your refrigerator.
