I'd like to say it's the unconditional love and time you spend with your adorable kids and grandkids that fulfill their hearts and ensure their souls of your undying commitment to love them for life!

And because of that, they will always be happy to spend time with you. I thought that was how it would be.

But, the truth of it is, it's perplexing. Some kids will take years to win over! And some will just naturally favor you.

I always felt that simply spending time with my grandkids and playing with them would be enough for them to think fondly of me.

But, honestly, the secret to getting my grandkids excited to see me is simply the art of 'Gift Giving'

There are lots of reasons why kids respond well to getting gifts

The more times I show up with gifts when I come to visit, the more excited they are to see me. And the more times they ask when I'm coming to visit next. or want to 'Facetime' or call me!

I've hiked, walked, played football, and taken them to movies, games, Dinasour exhibits, and Chuck E Cheese.

I've read to them, made forts with them taught them things, baked or cooked with them, etc.

And yet, all along I think what makes them love me more... is the gifting.

Kids enjoy surprises

I made a surprise treasure hunt once in my yard for them. I hid goodies and prizes too but that didn't excite them as much as when I brought them presents when I came to visit.

So there it is! My grandkids are just like the rest of the world enjoying consumerism at a young age.  I suppose it's simply fun for them.

And hey...whatever it takes! I love them so much it hurts! So yes, I'll shop and I'll buy and I will give them anything they want pretty much!

Just so I can hug them tight and kiss their cute little cheeks!

I've never been very materialistic even as a kid so I don't think this would have worked on me. But, getting a puppy or a kitten...? Yeah!

That would have won me over. However, if I didn't already love the person, it wouldn't have made a difference. I still would have kept the pet though)

Younger kids tend to love gifts and toys. While older kids enjoy experiences with grandparents more I think.

I think making your grandkids a priority in your life, will eventually be apparent to them as they age and that seems to be the most important thing.

LOOK: How Many of These Classic Summer Toys Do You Remember?

If you grew up in the Wild West of the '60s, '70s, or '80s, summer toys were a lifeline because many of us were locked outside (until the street lights came on). Inside was no place for a kid! Check out these classic summer toys that kept us cool, kept us busy, and always seemed to add a dash of danger.
