
A 3.8 Earthquake Rattled Northwest Washington Late Wednesday Night
At 11:35 PM Wednesday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake near Oak Harbor at a magnitude of 3.6 before upgrading it to 3.8.
The epicenter was located about two kilometers east-southeast of Oak Harbor at a depth of roughly 25.4 kilometers, and people felt it across a surprisingly wide area stretching from Camano Island to Bellingham, Everett, Stanwood, Burlington, Granite Falls, La Conner, Anacortes, and even into southern British Columbia.

A 2.5 magnitude aftershock followed at approximately 11:48 PM in nearly the same location. No significant damage or injuries have been reported.
What People Report They Actually Felt

A resident near Crescent Harbor in Oak Harbor said it felt like a jet flying too low; they could hear it before they felt it, and the house shook noticeably.

This is not random. As one commenter correctly pointed out, there are two primary fault lines that bisect Camano Island in the northern Puget Sound. The geology of this region, where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate continues to push beneath the North American plate, makes seismic activity in Northwest Washington and Southwest British Columbia a regular and expected occurrence.

The USGS earthquake history for this exact area shows a pattern of small quakes near Oak Harbor going back weeks: a 2.0 two weeks ago, a 1.5 two weeks ago, another 1.5 three weeks ago.
Wednesday's 3.8 was the largest in the recent cluster, but it fits a consistent pattern of low-level seismic activity in this corridor.
