State Tax Experts Say Yoga Isn’t Exercise

A new law went into effect Jan. 1 requiring businesses that provide exercise to pay sales tax. So why isn't yoga on the list?

Martial arts studios are furious after discovering they are now required to pay sales tax. Then they looked into how this bill was passed without them knowing anything about it, and discovered yoga studios, tai chi teachers and qi gong practitioners all successfully convinced the state (via lobbying) that they weren't really exercise instructors.

Considering you don't break a sweat or significantly raise your heart rate doing tai chi and qi gong, I can see that being fair... BUT YOGA?
