The idea that daylight saving time was created to help farmers is a myth! Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea in the 1700s as a way to extend the day and save energy. Good old Ben Franklin saw the summer months as a way to utilize the sun. I mean, why not use the sun instead of candles, right?

His idea didn’t go anywhere and didn’t catch on for many years when Germany picked up on it in 1916 as a way to save fuel during the First World War. The United States was the last country to the Daylight Saving Time party, adopting the practice in 1918, but didn’t keep it for long, and ended it until another war broke out (World War II) dubbing it “War Time”.

After World War II, states and towns were given the option to keep or end the time change. Well, as you can imagine, that didn’t work out too well.  There was a lot of confusion on what time it was in each state or town and who was on what time table. It was crazy! So, Congress came up with the Uniform Time Act.

So, here we are again, ready to spring ahead one hour this Sunday, March 14, 2021 – to conserve energy and lose sleep!  Luckily, most of our time keeping devices update by themselves. In the past, people often forgot about the time change and showed up to work late the Monday after.

Washington State is one of many states that is considering staying on DST indefinitely and that could happen in 2022…but don’t hold your breath, they’ve been toying with the idea for many years.

Don’t forget to change the batteries in your smoke/gas alarms.
