"Please welcome to the stage..." is a sentenced uttered a lot in Portland. The venue is dimly lit, except for spotlights and strobes for the performer. The audience, mostly men, but some women, too, cheers wildly as someone usually named Tiffany... Diamond... Or Amber walks out. She's confident. She's sexy. She's a stripper. And that's not her real name.

Portland, famous for keeping it "Weird", Voodoo Doughnuts, and craft breweries, is also home to more strip clubs per capita than any other city in the United States. They must also hold the record for most plays of "Pour Some Sugar on Me," although that is not confirmed.

Portland Has More Strip Clubs Per Capita Than Any Other U.S. City

You'd think Vegas would have the most strip clubs. Or Miami. Or even New Orleans (though who needs strip clubs when tourists are removing their shirts for beads). But Portland has one strip club for every 11,826 residents.

How Many Strip Clubs Does Portland Actually Have?

Portland has an estimated 50 to 60 strip clubs. I don't know why there's not a specific number available. I guess whoever keeps track of such things got distracted by the naked dancers.

Why Does Portland Have So Many Strip Clubs?

The reason Portland has so many strip clubs is that in Oregon, stripping is protected as freedom of speech.

Section 8 of Article 1 in Oregon’s State Constitution, states that “no law shall be passed restraining the free expression of opinion, or restricting the right to speak, write, or print freely on any subject whatever…”

Portlanders: Really? Any subject whatever?

Oregon State Constitution: "any subject whatever…”

Portlanders: Hot dang! Let's take our clothes off and dance!
