Umatilla Man Finds Car Thief Sleeping in Backseat Still in the Garage

A Umatilla man returned home to find his garage broken into. Upon inspection, he found someone had rifled through his things, loaded his valuables into one of the homeowner's cars and then tried to steal the car. Then things got weird.

Apparently after unsuccessfully trying to hot wire the car (and causing significant damage to the steering column), the would-be thief crawled into the back seat and fell asleep!

Joseph Manning, 28, of Irrigon was booked into county jail Monday. He also had in his possession women's jewelry, mail and credit cards stolen from other Umatilla homes -- as well as meth.
