Have Fun On the Water Safely This National Safe Boating Week
This week is National Safe Boating Week, and if you're like us, you're stoked to get back on the water. The weather is going to be perfect for boating this week and we're lucky enough to have so many way to enjoy the water around the Tri-Cities. However, the water is still dangerous, no matter you level of experience, so we just wanted to share some reminders and tips on how to stay safe out there while you're having fun.
Life Jackets! This seems like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many people (and pets) have been lost due to not having a jacket. Make sure you have the right jacket for which activity you're engaged in, and that they fit and are put on correctly.
Alcohol- Again, you'd think that after so many people have been injured or died due to alcohol-related accidents people would be cautious, but alcohol was listed as the leading factor in 15 percent of deaths in 2016. If you're of drinking age and you're driving a boat, DO NOT DRINK. And guess what, if you're under age, DO NOT DRINK at all, especially near water.
Boating Laws- Make sure you know and follow local boating laws. From state to state these can vary, so if you're taking your boat to Idaho, Oregon, or boating here in Washington, you know and follow all laws and regulations.
Don't Just Jump In- Even if you're near the shore, the water can seem peaceful and refreshing, but it's cold and is moving fast! Especially right now with all the run-off melting in the mountains, the currents are strong and you can get swept away in a moment. And with cold temperatures, hypothermia can restrict your body faster than you think. Use caution and make sure you are not alone when getting in the water with a life vest, no matter your swimming level.
